Dark Disciples II: The Freewareing

Freeware CRPGs are less common that -say- freeware adventure and platform games, mostly due to the fact that they need to be bloody big to be any good; a simple fact that translates into tons of content, detailed mechanics and buckets of Tolkien-esque words. Enter, Dark Disciples II, the honestly named and vastly improved sequel to the original Dark Disciples. It impressively is a rather huge freeware, tile-based, non-linear RPG sporting an impressive number of quests, characters, monsters and areas, that let's players freely explore its four continents and even come up with some interesting characters. I suggest you give it a try. I did.

  1. Have you ever played any of the more recent indie CRPGs that cost money.
For example anything from Basilisk Games or Spiderweb Software?

have not played much of either but they are polished and very fun.

and Spiderweb had a bunch of big demos and even encourages people who cannot pay for his game to pirate them, on his interesting blog.

  2. I remember someone blogging about me a while back...

Oh wait, it was me! :-D

DD2 was a tough game, but a good one. I think I completed the first Dark Disciples eventually, but not the second.

Avernum VI by Spidersoft was very, very good. Jeff's latest project looks really interesting too (Avadon: The Black Fortress).

  3. @ Jonathon: I'm afraid I haven't tried any of them -though I am aware of Eschalon- but they do look interesting. Think I'll give those demos a try. Mind you, you can't believe how much stuff has made it to my play-list, let alone the review list.

@ CaptainD: Ok, that's two suggestions to check Spidersoft out. Well, it seems I'll simply have to.

  6. No, and I was not serous enough about actually playing it to bother him with that.

But he might be unaware of the issue, it does not seem to mention anything on his site about it. So will inform him of the problem.
