Elite, originally released for the powerful and expensive BBC Micro and subsequently to everything with a chip in it, was written, designed and programmed (back in 1984) by David Braben and Ian Bell. The game was originally published by Acornsoft. The Amiga version -published by Firebird- is being presented here for dark, personal reasons.
Thank you for your post. The amiga version of Elite was the version of the game that I played when I was young. And I remember to have played it a lot. What are your "dark" reasons?
ReplyDeleteI tried Elite once, back in the early/mid 80s. Only once? Yes, because I couldn't even dock my spaceship. So I gave up. ;)
ReplyDeleteOne of the best games ever! In fact probably the only SP game to give the sense of freedom in such a grade.
ReplyDeleteI remember the massive game manual, or should i say game tome!...A great game!...
ReplyDeleteOh...and i was playing it on an Amstrad CPC 6128...lovely!
ReplyDelete@ andrea: Thanks for the kind words andrea. And if I told you what's dark about the reasons I'd have to either murder dear Mr. JMcL or a perfectly unfunny joke.
ReplyDelete@ JMcL63: Oh come on. I know rotating the bastard ship seems impossible at first, but after a few (dozen) missions you do get an auto-docking thingie... ;)
Dualnames: We absolutely agree my friend. Also, lele.
Sidd: Lovely manual, wasn't it? The novella wasn't bad either... And I always wanted a 6128 myself.
I was a cack-handed pile of crap at arcade games at the best of times gnome; I didn't have a computer back then- so my time at the machine was limited to occasional visits to someone who wasn't even a close friend (no time for fancy hitech gadgetry therefore): so I just gave up.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to either murder dear Mr. JMcL...
Come ahead! I'll kick your ass! ;)
Ha! You gave up! And you'll kick my military trained arse? BTW, got released today!!!
ReplyDeleteLoved this on the ST (looked exactly the same as the Amiga version... probably didn't sound as good though!). Great memories, never managed to complete more than the first couple of missions though - 8 in total I think?
ReplyDeleteHave you ever played Christopher Pinder's "A New Kind" - a very authentic Elite clone for the PC. Good stuff if you liked the original (and let's face it, who didn't?!?!).
Great news gnome! Hip hip hooray! ;)
ReplyDeleteI did try the New Kind dear Captain D, and I really did like it, though I must admit I generally tend to prefer Oolite.
ReplyDeleteOh, and JMcL, that's the exact spirit over here!
