Exceedingly Arousing Resonance Screenshots

Never thought I'd live to see the likes of them, but apparently they are here and they are beautiful in all their 2D glory. Oh, and for the thickies out there, they are the first screenshots of Resonance ever released and they are eloquently showing off quite a few of the -obviously varied, obviously beautiful- locations from the forthcoming indie adventure of the same name. Brilliant, right? Find out more at the xii games blog.

  4. Gorgeous. I have no idea why mainstream games were so keen to ditch pixel art.

  5. Mostly because they are mainstream, I'd say, and both pixel-art and 2D in general seem to be popular with rather niche audiences. After all publishers like EA or Ubisoft only care for profits. Or perceived profits.

  6. Beautiful visuals indeed dear Gnome... This looks rather delicious!

  7. Proof that pixel-art is still beautiful enough to be used in games. At least by some clever developers anyway!

  8. I'm really glad everyone here can still enjoy some pixelly goodness! Thanks for the post, gnome!

  13. Gnome, is it just me or would you have preferred Capcom to use a beautiful 2D art-style (ala Street Fighter III: Third Strike) instead of the generic 3D look for Street Fighter 4?

I think 2D still has a place in today's market, and I'd like to see more of it pop up. Unfortunately, it terms of mainstream games in seems to have gone the way of the dodo.

  14. The 2D games have had their moments in the past. It is time for video games to evolve. I have no problems with a 3D Street Fighter 4, and I doubt the quality will decrease because of a 3D fighting style.

  15. Well dear ross, I have to admit I'm quite fond of 2D and don't really care for the costs involved. So, uhh, yes, I'd rather SF 4 were 2D. Besides SF 3 looked absolutely beautiful and may the mainstream go sod itself :p

Hmmm, truth be said, dear funnyman, I've nothing intrinsically against 3D graphics. I just don't think they suit every kind of game and am absolutely certain (ie I know) that beauty has absolutely nothing to do with technology... So, I guess evolution would have nothing to do with a necessity for 3d.

  16. Actually, Funnyman, it contains 3D graphics but still has a class 2D fighting style. But then again, they already did this with the Street Fighter EX series... it was cool seeing Street Fighter in 3D for those three games, but I'd rather them use a beautiful 2D style for this one.

I definitely think Street Fighter Third Strike is better looking than Street Fighter 4.

It's not just graphics that count, it's art direction and designs that really make a game stand out visually.
