Ron Gilbert & Clayton Kauzlaric present DeathSpank

DeathChaseWhy, pinch my nipples and spank my ass (figuratively speaking if you'd be so kind; I'm far too old for the fetish scene and I think my head hurts too), but Monkey Island god Ron Gilbert is absolutely back in the game designing business with a game he's been working on for almost four years and he's not alone. The surrealy talented Clayton Kauzlaric is with him and so are Canadian publishing heroes Hothead games. As for the game, well, it's the same mysterious project Mr. Gilbert has been mentioning over at his blog and pitching to publishers for ages, though this time around it's got a lovely name too: DeathSpank.

Ahhh.. DeathSpank. I absolutely adore the sound of it and the fact that its based on them lovely Grumpy Gamer comics. I'm quite fond of the idea behind it too, you know, as it's the first humorous adventure RPG hybrid since Steve Meretzky's excellent Super Hero League of Hoboken and the first game ever to be described as Monkey Island meets Diablo. Oh, and it's gonna be episodic too. Also coming soonish. Happy happy days...

For further info you can read the official Hothead announcement, read Ron Gilbert's own post, try Mr. Clayton's take on the subject or even wait for the game's website to get some content.

  1. I seldom play PC games, but games with a comedic aspect to them are excellent. Will this game be coming to Xbox Live or PSN?

  2. Nothing has been announced yet, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't make it to consoles too. Oh, and we can be sure the humor will be excellent too.

  3. I hope it does. Inform me if it ever makes its way to consoles.

  4. I'll definitely let you know matey...

  5. Let's see, I love Monkey Island and I definitely love Diablo. Is there any chance I won't like this game?

    I sincerely hope not!

By the way, "pinch my nipples and spank my ass" is one of the most epic ways to start a post. xD

  6. No chance at all dear Nebachadnezzar. This will definitely be *the* game...

Oh, and thank you. May your nipples soon explode with delight too!

  7. Surely a game called DeathSpank could never fail? o_O

  8. Funnyman, if you have a PS2 you can still check out the Monkey Island series. Escape from Monkey Island was released on PS2 seven years ago, so you can find it for usually under $12.

  9. I sold my PS2 after I got a PS3, but I can still play PS2 games on my PS3. As far as Monkey Island is concerned, that game is different from DeathSpank. I am unsure if I will enjoy Monkey Island.

  10. My hopes exactly oh Pacian and surely Mr. Gilberts cunning reasoning...

You are indeed correct and helpful as ever dear Ross, though I must admit the 4th installment of Monkey Island isn't on par with the rest of the series.

Not sure you'll enjoy it either funnyman dear. Not much action innit and not the best of adventures either. Also the humor is just passable (good for video gaming standards).

  11. Gnome, one of my all-time favorites is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on the DS... have you checked it out yet?

  12. The name alone sounds hilarious: DeathSpank. Who would even think of naming a video game something like that? Humor should be applied in more video games. The dialog in the Simpsons was a perfect example of how comedy was done correctly in a video game.

  13. Only briefly dear Ross, though it's obvious it's both an excellent game and a proper adventure. I'll probably grab a copy...

Ahh, the Simpsons funnyman. The Simpsons and you're absolutely right too.

    Sure... let me know Joey...

  14. What a lovely post! I'm so happy for you and erm... your nipples Gnome! I've never played Monkey Island yet, but with your's, Calebs and now Nebacha's reccomendations its got to happen some time soon... And a PS2 version you say Ross? Excellent!

BTW Phoenix Wright is a must...

  15. My nipples are thanking you for being such a kind creature dear Father, and -frankly- so am I. Now, I would advise against the PS2 version of MI, as it's number 4 and it's by far the worse of the lot. I cant help but urge you to grab copies of Monkey I and II and play them on the PC via the excellently free ScummVM.

  16. Might see if Caleb will send me a copy of the ScummVM version for Dreamcast... He's good like that you know...

  17. Yes, he's great like that Father, but why don't you just download the free ScummVM version for the PC? A mouse always comes in handy when playing this kind of games y'know.

  18. "A mouse always comes in handy when playing this kind of games y'know"

That's why aplay mine with a Dreamcast mouse! But the PC version of ScummVM is a bit faster and currently plays more games.

Yeah FK you can go over to the SCUmmVM homepage and get a copy of it for the PC or Dreamcast. DC Evolution is down right now, otherwize you could just pop over there and get a .cdi bootable copy for the Dreamcast.

In any case you need a copy of the original game to use Scummvm.

Did you ever try out that copy of B.A.S.S. that I sent you?

Hmm...I wonder if that would start up without an import boot disk?

    Regardless:

    I cannot WAIT for Deathspank.

All those frozen yogurt shops are gonna PAY!

    *Blam*!

    *Blam*!

    *Blam*!

Take THAT you Frozen Yogurt Shop!!!!!!

I can't wait to unlock the hell level!

    *Blam*!

  20. I thought Phychonauts was the most humorous game I have ever played.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Aha! You've been watching grumpy gamer cartoons, haven't you oh naughtiest of Calebs? And a Dreamcast mouse... wooooow....

Hey don't do that tom! The nipples come first.. Tsk, tsk, young people...

Quite a choice Funnyman. Psychonauts was indeed brilliant and I do hope that DathSpank will be even better!

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is a damn shame that there won't be a sequel to Psychonauts.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wouldn't be so sure, though it would have to wait for Brutal Legend apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Considering the fact that the original game sold poorly, there is no reason for them to make a sequel.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am not sure mind you, but it seems that the game has sort of become a budget-price hit and developed a cult following so maybe, well, there's still hope...
