Fun, fun, fun, till her daddy takes the BFG away

Every gamer knows what BFG stands for. To make matters worse, and according to social statistics coming right out of my arse, most gamers believe that BFG is a bloody hilarious name for a gun. Taking into account that the majority (7) of Gnome's Lair audience (11) are indeed gamers, I'd like to share a secret with them (you): calling a big fucking gun a Big Fucking Gun is not funny. It's obvious. And irritating. Not funny.

Unfortunately most people laugh at this kind of stuff. Even here. In this humble, but enlightened, Lair.

Pathetic, but that's pop culture for you. Devoid of any redeeming traits (except Star Wars, if one can call it a trait of course) and capable of mutilating anything to a horrible over-exposed beast with 2 tentacles (to begin with).

A nice, atmospheric and gimmicky game (DOOM, in case you were scratching your head and gawking at the monitor with a bit of saliva hanging from the edge of your lip) changed the history of video games. Why? Because it was popular. Why was it popular? Only god knows and it/he/she got destroyed when confronted by a Babel fish. I mean, why was the Titanic popular (both the ship and the movie)? Its humor was non-existent. Just like DOOM's.

Still DOOM and its successors were imposed upon us all. Magazine fanboyism, capitalism's inherent tendency to avoid risk and the true nerds' desire to enter mainstream society, mutated DOOM to a cultural phenomenon and gaming to a pretty boring frag fest.

Thankfully not all is yet lost. DOOM may have inspired musicians, board game designers and speed-runners, may have spawned a horrid movie and 2 official sequels, but it hasn't managed to kill off neither humor, nor point-and-click gameplay. Behold the ultimate DOOM parody-remake-web-thingy: DAMNATION.

Heh, heh, just like an adventure, isn't it? Let's all gasp with excitement. Now, let us all go on and play a nice good ol' fashioned DOOM wad by visiting the excellent DoomsdayHQ (home of DOOM related win32 ports).

  1. I had no idea what a BFG stood for. Seriously, I really didn't. Probably because I never played Doom on the PC.

  4. So, you're both (yes, you Gamer C and you Tahir) telling me you 've never heard of BFG... Hmm... Likely, but not very. There are ways of finding out of course. More than one. More than the possible ways of skinning a cat.

Ah, mr. Elderly, yes.. damnation was part of the spacebar problem... That and my attempt to clean the keyboard... BTW, glad you enjoyed the links. (I didn't know... really)

  7. (waits for gnome to leave the room)

I actually quite enjoyed Doom 3 on xbox, a no brainer, stroll, shoot, reload....but athmoshperic in barrel fulls, perfect for late night, lights out, gameplay and the only end boss i've managed to beat in the last year (by running backwards)

  8. Only played a demo of Doom3, which was fun, but didn't actually make me want to try for more... Didn't scare me either... I don't know... I've always been more keen on Wolfy3d. Or even Duke's silly, parochial, redneck humor..

  9. BFG is funny (or just amusing) if a) you think it's somehow subversive and you're getting away with something ("You said 'fart,' Beavis. huh huh.") or b) if folks had no idea what it stood for but, when asked, didn't come up with the obvious answer.

  10. Hadn't thought of case b)... You are absolutely right... Cheers for the comment!

  13. Duke would probably have a fair idea......i presume, unless of course he's been cryogenically frozen, then he's probably dreaming abou ....

  19. Yes, Caleb, Doom was indeed fun. Great fun, actually.... Just not particularly funny and definitely a tombstone for originality.
