Caste Wars is a freeware online game squarely aimed at the CCG (that's Collectible Card Games) crowd, but also a deceptively easy way for beginners to start mastering the intricacies and logic behind Magic the Gathering or any other game of this ilk they might be interested in. Then again, Castle Wars could also be described as a perfectly simple, yet quite deep and addictive, online turn-based strategy game, that sports some decent AI and a lively community to play against.
The purpose of the game is to either be the first to be build a 100 storey castle or be the first to level your opponent's. All you have to do is wisely choose which card to play or discard per round. Sounds easy? Do try Castle Wars then and see just how good you are at managing sorcerers, builders and knights while attacking with crystal-fed dragons.

I've played this game several times over the last couple weeks. It's great fun to play against a real opponent in net play. The computer is too much of a push-over.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, you can be totally ruined by bad deals and the deck algorithm doesn't seem to shuffle and deal a real deck (making the chance of getting, say, five of the same useless cards in a row more slim) instead just generating a random card for each turn.
Still, a fun 10 minute diversion for a quick game!
UNfortunately you're quite right there dear Vince. It is quite a bit a game of luck... As for the useless cards, I think that discarding them sort of gets them out of the "deck".
ReplyDeleteI hate to mention it, but Castle Wars is a clone (read: ripoff) of Ants from Gemtree Software for their Peter platform, which is in turn very closely related to (but shallower than) Arcomage from Might and Magic 7 and 8, later released as a standalone. For online multiplier of Arcomage, try MArcomage.
ReplyDeleteNicholas!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you again my friend! I'll check Ants and Arcomage asap. Cheers & thanks!
tempting very tempting.... (remembers solemn pledge to finish the darkness.....)
ReplyDeleteA pledge is a pledege...
ReplyDeleteNice! Saw it on jayisgames a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteVery fun until you keep getting a string of high resource high power cards which you have to keep discarding :(
Not sure you heard of an oldie named ChronX, a virtual sci-fi card game similiar to Magic.
ChronX, huh? Nope never heard of it but I'll definitely check it out. Thank you dear Munkay. Oh, and the problem with the lack of decks is quite irritating indeed.
ReplyDeleteMore virtual card games here :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent, excellent, thank you!
