Despite still being in the army and still suffering from severe lack of sleep, I'd like to let you dear readers know that I've been as busy as an enlisted gnome could possibly be. This means that I've been -admittedly very slowly- working on the project I teased you about ages ago. In fact, the lovely pixelated pic you see above is one more hint regarding this still secret little project of mine. Oops, sorry about that. I meant this project of ours, but the incredibly talented person I'm working with will only be revealed when the time comes. Followers of this blog, mind, should already be aware of his work. Right, now on to some other bits.
Provided said project reaches a more or less finished state, which it hopefully will relatively soon, I've decided I'll try and follow it up with two more games. The first one will be a text adventure for the ZX Spectrum, that will be coded using The Professional Adventure Writing System (PAW) I've already started studying and experimenting with, and the second one will be a short shmup -again for the Speccy- I intend to extensively blog while creating. Then, I hope to actually finish that pesky PhD too...

Ah, yet another teaser! I love the pixelated swords, I must say. I look forward to playing this. What made you want to code for the Spectrum, by the way?
ReplyDeleteText adventure? ZX Spectrum? PAW?!
ReplyDelete*makes anticipatory noises*
@ Ithmeer: Oh, nothing but my unconditioned love for the little machine really. And the fact that PAW is still quite powerful. And relavily easy to script.
ReplyDelete@ Matt: Yes, yes, dear Matty. All it needs is a bit of time.
BTW, the secret project will not be a Spectrum game...
Go that gnome! ;)
ReplyDeleteUmm... Spectrum? Really?
ReplyDeleteI mean, I love the machine myself, but I am equally aware it is partially due to pink nostalgia goggles. To play the oldies, fine, I do that from time to time, but to create a new thing for it? Brave attempt, very retro, very stylish... but is it really worth it? Wouldn't it be cooler and easier to create something in Flash / Flex (using free tools, such as FlashDevelop, Flex SDK and Flixel library for example?
As for the secret project, I'd wager some short adventure game with the creator of Featherweight. Did I win anything?
@JMcL63 I go, I go my friend!
ReplyDelete@Barts: Well, I really think you have a very valid point indeed, and you do describe quite well why I go for the Spectrum, but I really want to give it a shot. Love the little thing... As for the next question... no comment, but I wouldn't say you'd win that much either...
Oh, and the Flash/Flex idea aint that bad...
Did you also still have some doctorate work to finish? Or did you wrap it up before the enlistment?
ReplyDeleteYou are quite the industrious gnome.
I'm afraid I still have stuuf to do for the PhD my friend. But, I do hope it'll be ready (and presented) before summer. Then again, I'm also preparing to move to a new house, a couple of papers, and a translation job. I'm sure my plan is flawless!
ReplyDeleteThe Spectrum is one of the most popular machines to code new games for. Excellent games from the likes of Jonathan Cauldwell, Bob Smith, Mojon Twins, etc. Personally, I'd take more notice of a new Speccy game than a flash game, and I'm sure many others would do too. Really looking forward to whatever you come up with, Gnome.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the support Neil! Oh, and I knew you'd like that...

Will I have to invest in a Spectrum to play this upcoming hit game..? -or will this be going to multi-platforms..;)
ReplyDeleteNo my friend, an emulator will do fine for all the Spectrum releases. Oh, and it's so nice to see you around these places again!
