Retroaction Teasing You

Speedball 2Laser SquadRetroaction LoadingGlorious piccies, wouldn't you agree dears? And to think they are here just to tease you... How very naughty of them. Anyway. Feeling teased already? Great! Now, know that Retroaction, the spanking new pdf e-mag for retro gamers, will soon be available and will -among an eclectic variety of other things- feature gnomes, amstrads, neils, amigas, text-adventures, speccies, shmups, and c64s. You will most probably get to get it from this place, which apparently also sports a forum bit.

  1. Looks even better scrunched up so you can't quite read it. But seriously, these images are from a quite small preview issue zero. I'm wondering whether it's good enough to release to the public as a proper preview "teaser". What do you think, Gnome?

  2. Hmmm... I'd say a very small teaser might not be a bad idea, provided of course the readability of text reached the level of the proper issue...

  3. Love the picture of Speedball 2 for the promo. I enjoyed playing that game on my college roommate's 486 and I even have a copy laying around here somewhere. I wore out his keyboard and had to purchase a new one after a semester of that game.

I also have a copy of the Playstation as well. My son hasn't gotten the hang of it yet but he will.

Thanks for the heads up on that e-mag. Glad to see you are back, Gnome.

  4. And glad to see you are still around and commenting dear Blue Gnome. Oh, and how's that Playstation version?

  5. I'd also like to know... Although Speedball 2100 garnered some rather mediocre reviews, it might still be a good game.

  6. Apparently you're right. The reviews imply a sub-par game. And it does look 3D. Eurk!

  7. Give me a heads up when the Issue is posted.
I like the Speedball 2 one as well.

  9. Why does the second pic remind me of Army of Two ...

The only sports game that I remotely remember from "long long ago" was Brutal Football. Anyone played that before?

  10. Oh, no, not Army of Two. This is Laser Squad and was released in the mid-80s. Besides it's a brilliant strategy little gem that eventually spawned X-Com / UFO.

Brutal Football... Hmm, does ring a bell, but never played it I think.

  11. Was it done by the same guys who did Laser Squad Nemesis?

Brutal Football can be found here. A bunch of beardy old men running after a ball while beating up goatmen, lizardmen and each other while they're at it :p

  12. Yes, the very same. The Gollop brilliance is still at work apparently!

Oh, and thanks for the Brutal link. Think I had seen it on the Amiga and oddly the Jaguar. Never played it. Download time I guess...

  13. Hmmm.... I think everyone is correct in saying the PS version is Speedball 2100. From what I remember, it is pretty much the same game, not much updated between versions.

Tell you what... I'll play it some over this next week and report back to everyone.

  14. We'll be waiting dear Blue Gnome. We'll be waiting. Possibly playing some Speedball 2 while doing so too.

  15. Well, I finally got ther chance to play Speedball 2100 on the PS. From the hour of playtime, it seems to be the same game as Speedball 2.

Biggest thing is upgrade of graphics into a more 3D environment and looking at the field of play from a 75 deg. angle instead of the overhead in SP2. Also is a little darker in color.

Using the controller is definitely different from using the keyboard. Having tackle and throw on two different buttons still takes some getting used to (can't do my favorite trick of throw to the opponent/immediately tackle him/repeat until he is taken out on a stretcher as easily).

From the team maintenance perspective, everything looks to be in place. I'll have to go back and look at the PC version to compare pricing and options.

    Enjoy!

  16. Well, it was definitely worth the wait... And it sounds good too. Sort of a SB2 remake with updated graphics. Highly intriguing. Thanks!
