Re: Call of Cthulhu Open RPG session

As quite a few brave scholars of the occult have already gathered (I'm looking at you Guttertalk, Elderly, Ithmeer and Father Krishna) and Open RPG remains as freeware as it used to, it's about time we get organized. You know, to have our first online RPG session, that is.

So, I suggest you all download the free Quick Start Cthulhu PDF booklet, have a quick read and if possible create a character, get yourselves a copy of Open RPG, try to get used to its interface and suggest a day and time (preferably next week) for our gaming session. Oh, and if anyone else would care to join, then -by all means- do let me know. Think we could accommodate one more gamer...

  1. I wouldn't mind joining in (I have way too much free time next week) but I'm a bit inexperienced when it comes to pen & paper type RPG's.

If you don't mind accommodating a beginner you can count me in :-)

  2. Gnome, I think it would also be important to know timezones. I am in GMT - 4, and pretty much any time next week is good with me.

  4. Oh and I found a good CoC character sheet for OpenRPG (right-click, save as):

  5. I'm in GMT -6. Later in the evening, after 9 PM is best for me, especially if we're talking week days. Weekends are more flexible.

Not to get overly complicated, but a calendar on http://www.timetomeet.info is pretty easy to mark the times you're available (using your timezone). You just have to paint the times you're available. If folks want to go that route, I'll send emails to folks.

  6. What time are we using--1890s, 20s, or modern? More to figure out my character than anything else. I like having backstories. :)

  7. I noticed a discrepancy about how to determine skills points to distribute:the Cthulhu.xml character sheet says it's EDU x 20 & the Quick Start says EDU x 15.

Also, for weapons, Cthulhu.xml has a different list (such as SMG and machine gun) than the Quick Start.

I assume that we go by the Quick Start rather than the character sheet on these two. Everything else seems to be the same.

Finally, in the character XML sheet, only 10 rows are predefined. To add more for additional skills, select the Skill node, right-click, and select Design. It wasn't obvious to me.

Here's my first roll on a character, which I like enough to keep. (I exported from OpenRPG, but I had to really clean up the HTML.)

  8. Ah, great!

Tom glad you can join us, and worry not mate, you won't be the only beginner.

Now, ithmeer, you are quite right. I'm in GMT+2, and I do believe that the time to meet thingy guttertalk discovered will be the only way to arrange this.

Our setting will indeed be the roaring 20s and I do feel the New England area should be more than appropriate. Oh, and better stick to the Quick Start rules.

Sailor turned poet huh? We got a great one in Greece you know... Ah, Kurosiwo, what a poem.

Now, let's wait a bit for Elderly and Father...

  10. Ah, thanks gutter, didn't really have a chance to check that file out in detail. I looked at the site for time to meet, definitely the way to go.

  11. Elderly and Father, I couldn't find email addresses in your profiles or your respective blogs.

To use the online calendar, I'll need to send an email, so you can send me your email addresses. Use my gutteralk account on gmail.com.

    Thanks.

  12. I'm GMT +0 :p

The good thing about that is that I can play pretty much anytime since any time you guys go with will be around afternoon time for me.

I'll fill in my times on that TimeToMeet thing but I'm available Monday-Friday (it's a lazy week) anytime. Well, providing I manage to wake-up, lol.

  13. I'm pretty new to pen/paper style rpgs too but I'd like to join you guys as well. It'd be fun :D
My email's johntash at gmail dot com but I'm pretty free most of next week

  14. Sure, tash, join away... I'll mail you for the hours.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'll have to check with my mom, but I guess I would be interested too. You could use my help, I'm pretty good with a lantern and fleeing and stuff, so... Well, let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Right.. You provide us with an email David and we'll see what monstrosity to feed you to...

where do you put your characters stats in open rpg? and why is my character better looking than I am?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rigt, invited you David...

Mr. Elderly, no need to worry about such matters. Just mail me your final character and we'll be fine.

Oh, and is Thursday 15:00 GMT ok for everyone?

    ReplyDelete
  20. That time is fine gnome, as I believe it is 11 where I am. And what was that about emailing characters?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, when you're ready you could e-mail me your characters. Gotta have copies of them y'know...

    ReplyDelete
  22. hurray thursday 15:00 GMT.... yippee

  23. That's 11 am here, which I probably can't make.

But keep me in the loop on the server info: my meeting might be canceled, and I might try an early lunch from a wifi zone with the laptop. :)

  24. Got the characters of Elderly, Ilthmer and of course Guttertalk and waiting for the rest.

Now, why don't we find an hour to fit everyone? Say, Thurdsay a bit later? Same time (roughly) Friday? Let's just use GMT though...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Almost any time from 14:00 to 23:00 GMT is good with me, on either Thursday, Friday, or the weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 15:30 GMT on Friday would help: It gives me a half day in the office before going home to, err, work.

I have a phone conference I have to attend at 19:00 GMT unfortunately.

Thanks for working with my schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm fine with that... A bit earlier would be excellent but 15:30 is fine too...

    ReplyDelete
  28. That works great. Is that our final time then?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Shit! I just arrived at the post after having been away for a few days! Crap!

    Am I too late?

Exact date and time of commencement plese!

BTW Guttertalk, Gnome has my email address so please feel free to get it from him!

  31. Obviously I'm too late for this, but whenever a new campaign starts or room for one more opens up I'd like to play...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I can't promise i'll be able to make it thursday at 1530 gmt but I'll definitely try. It just depends on whether or not I have to go in for work or not.
Either way, I'll email my character to you in a minute gnome!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Father, you're not late. Just mail me your character, have a read of the booklet and get to grips with Open RPG.

Same thing with you Malons ... :)

Now, are we all ok with Friday 15:30 GMT? Please, answer and send me your characters...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Can't make it for Friday 15:30 Gmt, so if Gnome could keep my character on dry ice till next time, he's lactose intolerant by the way so no dairy foods please.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ok then, lt 's try something else...

Not friday... shall we say... uh... Monday some time after 14:00 GMT?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can't play on Monday until around 17:00 GMT.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sounds good to me... What about everyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Monday at 1700 GMT is doable. I'll create a bogus meeting for that time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great, great... Seems to be working out finally...

    ReplyDelete
  40. So 17:30 GMT it is, then?

  41. Hi I am new to both the pen and paper rpg, and the openrpg. I will take a few days to famiarize myself, but I need a break from teh mindless rpg videogames. THis Call of Cthulhu sounds like a great game. I will roll a character,a dn send it in to you guys.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sure, feel free to give it a try, but I can't be sure when we'll be having our next stab at a game...

    Welcome though!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks. I have created a character, and was wondering if I just send it to you in the .xml format, or what? I was aldo wondering if you guys used the original rules or the d20 version. I found a nice torrent and should soon be the proud owner of the complete set of books for the game in pdf format.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Better go with a doc/txt file dreadmortis. Oh, and we're going the traditional non-d20 way...

    ReplyDelete
  45. as an interested observer, how did this work out for you?

there is a group of folks over on Pharyngula

    http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/03/the_dungeon_master_fails_his_s.php

that are interested (many pharyngulites worship cephalopods and all) in doing the same thing.

any commentary on the problems faced, etc., would be welcome.

    cheers

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow, lovely group them godless Pharyngulites. Think they know if octopuses 'ave orgasms?

Anyway. Onto the OpenRPG bit, well, frankly it didn't work for we didn't manage to get together... Sad, innit?

If I ever manage to actually play an OpenRPG session, I'll sure let you know though...
