SMILE, it's Super Metroid

Super Metroid was more than a class act. It was an absolute classic. An atmospheric, extremely detailed, ridiculously addictive and masterfully designed game, that -according to countless gnomes- can easily be characterized as the best game the Super NES had to offer. But, surely, there's no point ranting on. You retro obsessed humans know all about Super Metroid, don't you?

What might be of interest though, is SMILE, the Super Metroid Integrated Level Editor, which ...err... let's you edit levels and create some brand new ones all by yourselves. Apparently tinker with items, weapons, sprites and backgrounds too. Download SMILE here and have a look at more Super Metroid goodies here.

  1. ugh.. some of the wall jumping sequences made me want to kill myself in that game, but never the less it remains as one of my personal favorites. I wish Nintendo would make another side scrolling version of it.

  2. Don't think we'll get lucky in the official 2d Metroid department Joe, but Super Metroid should soon appear on the Wii Virtual Console and then there's always they much hyped forthcoming Wii Metroid FPS. It won't feature no jumps mind you.

  3. I looked around trying to find a rom for super metroid for about a half hour but no luck...it seems that now that it is coming out on the virtual console the rom sites have removed it...I was excited about trying out the editor too...oh well...

  8. You're most welcome Mr. Elderly. Anything else I could arrange for? Care to be a general perhaps?

  9. I made the foolish mistake of renting Super Metroid from my local video games store - thinking I could complete it in 2 nights. *Ha!!* No chance. Was a great game though.

I'd love for Nintendo to allow this to be downloaded from the VC onto a DS. It's not a game could sit and play an a telly, but would really get into as a handheld.

  10. That would be quite an idea. A la PSP, right?

  16. I'll just leave my Videogame nickname Jonathan hero. It look like a first name and last...

    Well anyway...

I beated the game normally first (no cheats, because I never heard of a gamegenie back then...), Had the real game at one time and lost it, Downloaded the game from the VC (for I think 800 Wii Points) then I thought, hey, make a Zero mission of Super Metroid, and Retell Samus's 3rd adventure, I was working on the suit change to match that of Zero Mission game, I also change Samus Suit charge to look like it did in Zero mission, Even made the Power suit look like the Varia Suit of Zero Mission(1st Zero Mission) I'm waiting for a Release of Super Metroid ZERO MISSION on Wii Ware... Until then got to deal with making a Zero Mission (Remake) on SMILE. Wait, Why don't they have downloadable contents on Super Metroid VC?

  17. Well, because the VC is admittedly a sub par service with ridiculous prices, I'm afraid. Stopped using it ages ago...

Oh, and that sounded like a most intriguing story and a very very interesting mod...

  18. I disagree about the prices. While you can't buy much with 2000 points, remember that each point is 1 cent. Super Metroid has been hailed as the best game in the series, and possibly one of the best games of all time. I think that's worth 8 bucks (800 points).

  19. Then again a proper cartridge can be bought for less than 5$...

  20. I've looked for days for a rom that will run in SMILE, but each one is denied for being a PAL version. Does anyone know where a good copy is?
